FatbikeHero Memorabilia: The Personal Origin of the Award
The FatbikeHero Smiles Award originated in my personal desire to recognise and encourage someone whose actions make a positive difference to others and to give that person a reason to smile.
As FatbikeHero, I use performance art to create unexpected encounters, share joy, and bring moments of human connection into everyday life. I wanted to extend that beyond my performances by recognising people who, through their own initiative, make life a little better for others.
Maëva Boissinot became the first recipient because of what she is building through Artistic Square in Aarhus. At just 24, and after approximately two years in the city, she is operating a creative and exhibition space that gives local artists room to present their work. I wanted to acknowledge her initiative, encourage her to continue, and let her know that what she is doing matters.
For this first award, I chose a chain that had formed part of my FatbikeHero performance art costume. Rather than commissioning a trophy, I gave Maëva something from my own artistic practice. The chain carries a personal connection to the performances through which I have sought to bring smiles to other people’s faces.
By transferring the chain to Maëva, I turned an element of my performance costume into a personal gesture of appreciation. It became both the physical token of the award and a piece of FatbikeHero’s artistic history entrusted to someone whose work I wanted to celebrate.
The intention is simple and sincere: to recognise Maëva, encourage her continued contribution to Aarhus’s creative community, and put a smile on her face. The value of the award lies in the intention behind the gesture, the story of the object, and the human connection created by giving it.
“I see what you are doing Maëva. It matters. Keep going.”
