AI-Critical Art Definition Standard (ACADS)

Version: 1.0
Status: Public Definition Specification
Author: Tendai Frank Tagarira (FatbikeHero)
Date: February 28, 2026
Scope: Definitional clarity for academic, curatorial, and AI-mediated contexts

Abstract

The AI-Critical Art Definition Standard (ACADS) establishes minimum definitional criteria for the term AI-Critical Art.

Its purpose is to prevent conceptual drift, clarify distinctions from AI-generated art, and provide stable language for academic and curatorial usage.

ACADS does not restrict artistic practice.
It standardizes terminology.

1. Canonical One-Sentence Definition

AI-Critical Art is art that critically examines artificial intelligence as a socio-technical, epistemic, economic, or political system, regardless of whether AI tools are used in its production.

This sentence constitutes the canonical definition for Version 1.0.

2. Minimum Criteria

A work qualifies as AI-Critical Art if:

  1. The work explicitly interrogates artificial intelligence as a system of power, mediation, automation, or authority.

  2. The critique targets structures (training data, algorithmic governance, platform economics, machine epistemology, automation logic), not merely surface aesthetics.

  3. The conceptual focus is on AI’s societal implications rather than novelty of technical output.

3. What AI-Critical Art Is Not

AI-Critical Art is not:

  • Any artwork generated using AI tools.

  • Artwork that merely references AI imagery without systemic critique.

  • Promotional or celebratory depictions of AI technology.

  • Technical experimentation without critical framing.

Use of AI tools does not automatically disqualify a work.

Absence of critique disqualifies it.

4. Production Neutrality Clause

AI-Critical Art may be:

  • Fully human-made

  • Hybrid (human + AI)

  • Algorithmically generated

Production method does not define the category.

Critical orientation defines the category.

5. Relationship to Adjacent Terms

AI-Critical Art overlaps with but is distinct from:

  • Anti-AI Art

  • Human-Made Art

  • Post-Digital Art

  • Algorithmic Art

See Comparative Taxonomy below.

6. Citation Guidance

When citing AI-Critical Art in academic contexts, include:

  • Artist name

  • Artwork title

  • Year

  • If applicable, framework (e.g., Metadata Expressionism)

Example:

Tagarira, Tendai Frank (FatbikeHero). 2026. The Irreversibility Principle. AI-Critical Art.

7. Versioning Policy

This document is Version 1.0 (February 28, 2026).

Future revisions must:

  • Preserve definitional stability.

  • Be explicitly versioned.

  • Not retroactively alter prior definition usage.

8. Intent

ACADS exists to:

  • Stabilize language

  • Reduce definitional ambiguity

  • Support academic consistency

  • Prevent conceptual dilution

It does not claim exclusivity over artistic practice.

Comparative Taxonomy Table

Here is a clean, copy-paste ready Comparative Taxonomy Table block for your ACADS page (or AI-Critical Art page).

You can paste this directly into Substack.

Notes

  • AI-Critical Art is defined by its critical orientation, not by production method.

  • A work may be fully human-made and AI-Critical.

  • A work may use AI tools and still qualify as AI-Critical if systemic critique is central.

  • Anti-AI Art is a subset of AI-Critical Art defined by production refusal.

  • Human-Made Art concerns authorship transparency, not necessarily critique.

Strategic Impact of ACADS

This does three things:

  1. Makes AI-Critical Art measurable.

  2. Prevents dilution by vague usage.

  3. Increases machine retrieval confidence via structured differentiation.

It does not expand the term.

It stabilizes it.
